Mastodon Guitarist Bill Kelliher On New Record: "Hopefully An Early 2017 Release"

Brett Kelliher of Mastodon
Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher has confirmed the band will be recording new music soon and thinks an early 2017 release is likely. Kelliher talked with Morgan Richards in between shows (of Mastodons last UK tour) about the status of the band and what to expect from Mastodon in the future.

"I feel like of the eleven or twelve songs that we've got demo'd, vocals and alot of lyrics," said Kelliher, "Lyrics are always the last thing to shape together. I think we're pretty close. I think it's not going to take very long to get into the studio and knock it out. So, hopefully an early 2017 release."

Mastodon hasn't released an album since, Once More 'Round the Sun, which was released in 2014. That album, which took off from where The Hunter left off, was a critical and fan success.

"There's alot of things that I wrote (for the new album) that sound like Once More 'Round the Sun are even delving deeper into all those nooks and crannies of progression. Alot of catchy choruses. Melodic verses and stuff like that," said Kelliher, "Not so much like Motherload, like that's pretty poppy for us, that's probably as poppy as we'd ever be, sounding you know, but not quite in that direction. (We're) trying to get in more like darker, it's hard to say dark and pop at the same time, but to me it's an easy way to."

If you thought Mastodon's last album wasn't dark enough, then you might be super stoked about the new stuff. For more on Mastodon's new music and the infamous appearance on Game of Thrones, watch the full interview below.
