Viacom has announced that they will be launching MTV Classic, a channel dedicated to MTV programming from the music era, next month.

Originally founded as an all-music channel on August 1st in 1981, MTV became a pop-culture phenomenon during the eighties and nineties with it’s unique brand of music video programming, which helped turn a long list of artists (Michael Jackson, Madonna, Nirvana, Dr Dre) into superstars.

In 1992, MTV introduced The Real World, the channel's first reality show, which eventually became the music channels downfall. The success of the Real World led to more scripted and reality-shows and by 2005, the music video had seemingly become an afterthought, on a channel created strictly for music videos.

While the new MTV channel will feature no VJ’s (that's short for Video Jockey) and a little-to-no music video’s, it will feature exclusive MTV original shows like Beavis and Butthead, Daria, Total Request Live, Aeon Flux, Total Request Live, MTV Unplugged, Laguna Beach, The Hills, Cribs, Jackass, and Punk’d.

“MTV’s programming vault is a music and pop culture goldmine with universal resonance,” said Sean Atkins, President of MTV, in a statement. “MTV Classic gives audiences a modern and artful home for classic MTV programming and — alongside MTV, MTV2, MTV Live and mtvU — rounds out a diverse portfolio with music and youth culture at its core.”

MTV Classic is set to launch on August 1st, replacing VH1 Classic. MTV hasn’t announced whether Jimmy the Cab Driver will make his return.
